Re: A complete mystery gull from Newfoundland

Here is a picture of its wing from January 2001, taken by Bruce Mactavish.
There was no hint of a white mirror on P9 then, and as in 2003 there was no dark mark on P5.

A complete mystery gull from Newfoundland

This adult gull spent several winters at the St John's sewage outflow, Newfoundland, Canada, back in 2001 - 2003. Here are my images of it, taken in February 2003. They are just video stills, but that only adds to the mystery... GullspecNewfoundlandJan03.jpg GullspecNewfoundlandJan03b.jpg GullspecNe...

Re: IGM news?

Hi Chris, information has been minimal so far indeed, especially for anyone who is not on Facebook (like yourself). I think the best thing to do is to write an email to Ronald Klein. All I know is that the meeting will be held at the Heide Spa Hotel in Bad Düben (http://www.heidespa.de/) from 14-17 ...

Re: Any oopinion about this white winged gull?

The primaries are not very convincing indeed, but the tail pattern certainly is outside of the variation seen in glaucoides.
Therefore I would call this a Kumlien's Gull.

Re: smithsonianus with GPS to Norway

I am a bit late with this, but I checked the flight path of this bird and it does not look quite right. The link has changed; the Google Earth file is now on http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/dcr/water-res-protection/watershed-mgmt/gull-study.html. If you look at the flight path and the data in Googl...

Hi, Something from Oostende, Belgium, today. has anyone else ever seen a 3rd-cycle Lesser Black-backed with plumage like this? Note dark shaft streaks on scapulars!
