Re: Ringed Caspian Gull - February 10th 2014

Any more pics of that gull on the left in the third picture (with thick black band on bill), Christian?

Re: I was challanged with the ID of the 2 gulls in the attac

Both birds show massive amount of black on outer primaries: even the black on outer web of P7 reaches the primary coverts (at least in the left bird),
so Caspian Gull can quite safely be ruled out.
I agree with Lou that both look like Armenian Gulls.

Re: Question about secondaries

Yeah, 84-86 shows a slightly worrying pattern on the secondaries.
But none of these birds show truly black 'ink spots' or 'piano keys' as typical smithsonianus.

Re: gulls of crete

I would be extremely cautious with identifying out of range barabensis, even in Israel.
There appear to be quite a lot of strange, "barabensis-like" birds around in the Middle East in winter.
I will do a post on them on Birdingfrontiers shortly.

Re: CGs_Hortobágy_Hungary_2014_January_II

Hi Lou, a hybrid swarm? Perhaps - I guess it is possible. However, are we sure that we are not just seeing variation in cachinnans here? Having just returned from a gull trip to the eastern edge of the Black Sea, where there were tens of thousands of Caspian Gulls and not a single ringed bird (so pr...
