Re: An old friend from Poland

Hi,
Kozielno is in the southwest of Poland, close to the border with Czech Republic.
As you can see in figure 1 of this paper, this colony is far from the main contact zone and holds mainly Caspian Gulls.

Re: Great Black-backed Gull or Yellow-legged Gull?

Hi, I am somewhat puzzled by Lou's comment and by the lack of further replies. I see a good Great Black-backed Gull in Piero's pictures... The heavy, blunt bill with pretty much vertical end to upper mandible fit GBBG much better than YLG. The bold pattern on scapulars and wing coverts I would inter...

Re: Adult Canet-en-Roussillon 10.9.2013

Hi Walther, a Yellow-legged Gull indeed, and something seems to have gone wrong in its left wing, as one inner primary seems to be missing there. This may not have anything to do with moult, but could simply indicate some local damage. BTW: The current issue of Natuur.Oriolus features an article on ...

Re: odd gull. Glaucoides, pale herring or Viking....?

Hi Antonio,
in a glaucoides, even a big male, I would expect (much) less of a gonydeal angle.
I would agree with this bird being most likely a "Viking Gull".

Re: 4cy Caspian type

Hi Maarten,
before going into the hybrid/Caspian debate, I am wondering if this is not some kind of Herring Gull?
I see nothing that really excludes that option...

Re: dark "shins" on large gulls

Hi Martin, the statement about dark shins in atlantis is not from Malling Olsen but from the Dubois paper (Birding World 14:7, 2001). The exact wording (also posted at http://gull-research.org/atlantis/1cyoct.html) was: " All the juveniles I checked on the Azores and on the Canary Islands showed ext...

Re: Odd 2cy gull in London

We are talking about this one? http://www.talk.gull-research.org/download/file.php?id=4227 That is a 2nd calendar year, in my opinion. New inner primaries would have broader white tips if it was a 3cy. Also, the greater coverts are still juvenile, and the axillaries are way too dark for a 3cy in lat...
