Hi Maarten,
before going into the hybrid/Caspian debate, I am wondering if this is not some kind of Herring Gull?
I see nothing that really excludes that option...

Re: dark "shins" on large gulls
Hi Martin, the statement about dark shins in atlantis is not from Malling Olsen but from the Dubois paper (Birding World 14:7, 2001). The exact wording (also posted at http://gull-research.org/atlantis/1cyoct.html) was: " All the juveniles I checked on the Azores and on the Canary Islands showed ext...

Re: Odd 2cy gull in London
We are talking about this one? http://www.talk.gull-research.org/download/file.php?id=4227 That is a 2nd calendar year, in my opinion. New inner primaries would have broader white tips if it was a 3cy. Also, the greater coverts are still juvenile, and the axillaries are way too dark for a 3cy in lat...

Re: Odd 2cy gull in London
I do not know how normal it is exactly, but I have seen 2cy birds before in which the innermost 1-2 primaries mimicked the adult pattern. See, e.g., this colour-ringed graellsii : https://plus.google.com/photos/115659792470435170210/albums/5500922206166368673/5500922286627132530?banner=pwa&pid=55009...

Re: Hybrid from the Netherlands
Indeed the green ring 'AH6' has been replaced by a blue one, code 'G.JAL'.

Re: Larus marinus?
Hi Dmitry,
I do not see any indications for marinus. The bird looks more like a Herring Gull to me.

Re: Head-streaked michahellis or Azorean atlantis?
To be honest I am not even sure that this bird is a 2nd winter; note the distinct white primary spots, which seem to indicate 3rd winter.
I am also not sure that it is not a Herring Gull...

Re: Argentatus with clipring - tayeri pattern
Hi Albert, I cannot help with the clip ring, but maybe with the species: I feel sure that the bird is a Caspian Gull, rather than argentatus. A few show such a "thayeri pattern". Note that the underside of P10 shows almost no black on the inside of the shaft, which is typical for Caspian Gull. Also,...

Re: Larus thayeri "Cipriana" back again
Maybe it is a good idea to collect all photos of this bird through the years and post them on one webpage?
I know there are photographs of it in its 1st, 3rd, 4th (?) and adult cycles.
Would be interesting to see all documentation of this bird in one place.

It has dark outer webs of not only P10 but also P9.
There are certainly birds like this in Newfoundland.
