Re: Dark eyed YLG
hi jonas, that's a caspian gull, steppenmöwe, although a weird one concerning the small p10 mirror, solid subterminal band (p10) and black down to even p3(?) and bright yellow bareparts. so this could indeed be a contender for an eastern caspian. it's a cachinnans because it has long white tongues/r...

Re: Dark eyed YLG
not that i know of, wolfgang. but that doesn't mean anything since most birders from romania and bulgaria don't differentiate much the gulls from the argentatus-complex. even though plenty of birding tours of western europeans visit the danube delta, durankulak and burgas regions i've never heard of...

dark dwarfy michahellis?
hi, one of the gulls adjacent ot the GBBG in herastrau park bucharest 17.12.2009 looked very plain brown and sort of compact in these pics. i know that some YLG can be so dark and unfortunately the quality of pics gives little insight in moult detail but i think there are some moulted coverts. other...

Re: Is one Herring Gull?
yes, she's a good example how a teenager doesn't want to get an adolenscent - and it's the other species. she looks beautiful by the way, mars. i got badly tricked by a bird i once photographed on gotland, 20.08.2008 i had no actual experience with 2cy herring gulls... this is the one http://w...

Re: Is one Herring Gull?
hi javier, certain 2cy herring gulls indeed can look similar to your bird. it is however a 1st winter (1cy) - see very pointed primaries with hardly any pale at tips, no yellow tip to bill (in 2cy almost alwys large gulls have a more extended pale tip). the bird is still moulting its coverts. and a ...

Re: moult in 1cy
bedankt, mars, for this elaborate presentation which i could follow entirely - should have studied more carefully your (rel. new) michahellis section. so it's absolutely normal, 45%. good work that you did with scoring them back in 2003. unfortunately there aren't any YLG in stuttgart  at least...

Re: moult in 1cy
it is definitely a 1cy for the reasons stated by peter, most coverts are 1st generation (see GC). i know these kind of 2nd gen coverts from mid winter; see the attached pics from january - not so plain grey but dull with a dark shaft. i concludeed these are later moulted 2nd gen. coverts, not 3rd ge...
