Re: Viking Gull - Larus hypergentatus
The bot-belly, short legs and 'facial expression' remind me of Glaucous. Also the primaries were paler brown. Or is it just the bill? Amsterdam, 25-10-09.

Re: Yellow S3E4 2cy micha Croatia
Unlike NTT8, this one never returned to Amsterdam...
Many Croatian birds seem to migrate up north. On the Łubna dump near Warsaw I saw 3-5 different birds per day in July/August. In fact, all but one colour-ringed michahellis over there came from Croatia!

Re: Hybrids fuscus x argentatus
Hallo Peter,
mantle colour. Like I wrote, this bird was distinctly darker than Common Gull, which was also present. Also note the combination of red orbital ring, broad band to P5 and slight yellow cast to the legs (none of which exclude Herring, I know ).
Cheers

Bird 6, 16-10-09, Heemskerk. It may be that some birds actually involve the same individual, although this one was found among Black-headed Gulls in a village. No large gulls to compare to but the mantle was distinctly darker than in Common Gulls.

Re: smith lookalikes
http://www.birdpix.nl/album_page.php?pic_id=188249&recent=0&db=0 This is a Herring but not an American IMO. Upper- and undertail coverts of coure are fine, but the tail is slightly off (a lot of white on the outer web of R6) and especially the underparts seem too blotchy. This in combination with th...

Re: Hybrids fuscus x argentatus
Hallo Derek,
so argentatus x fuscus is not a common hybrid in Ireland? I really do wonder where these birds are from. In Holland they seem to be rather rare, except around Sep-Oct.
Cheers
