Re: Gull ID from northern Norway
Now that I look at it again, this gull seems rather interesting perhaps... First of all, its age: the outermost primary has a rounded tip, and does not look extremely worn. Looks like a 2nd-generation feather to me. New inner primaries have distinct white tips, and therefore appear to be 3rd-generat...

Re: L. fuscus fuscus like?
At first sight, moult does not seem very spectacular: 6-7 new primaries, while P9-10 are old and juvenile. Pretty normal for any 2nd-cycle LBBG at this time of year. However, a closer look reveals something interesting: a slight moult contrast in the new primaries and corresponding primary coverts. ...

Re: Dark Herring Gul?
When looking at the 2nd cycle link of JanJ above (and dismiss the 3rd cycle birds there), I see the feared variability. But also, I see a white outer web of R6 on the 4th bird, the unwanted pattern of the tail-feathers on the 5th Bird 4: I find this hard to judge on a standing bird like this, holdi...

Re: Dark Herring Gul?
Hi Theo, like I said on the wnm.nl forum , judging the colour and pattern of plumage parts can be a matter of personal interpretation... For this Spanish bird, I would say that the underparts and lower hindneck (+ upper mantle) look entirely dusky. I agree they look mottled (what you call 'blocked')...

Never seen anything like this in mich/cach myself....
Interesting - but my guess is that this kind of moult is rare in Armenian Gull ?
Fantastic photographs by Amir, by the way!

Re: Extensive scapular moult, YLG?
Both birds are Lesser Black-backed Gulls.
Advanced moult in the scapulars has been documented by Theo, Mars and others at De Maasvlakte and Dintelhaven.
See http://www.gull-research.org/lbbg1cy/lbbg1cyjuly.html for more information.

Re: Can this be argenteus?
Such a long, pale tongue on the underside of P10 is highly unusual in pure argenteus . However, it is slightly more regular in Dutch birds (many of which are probably intergrades argenteus x argentatus). Here is a bit of a similar adult; it was defending a territory in a Belgian argenteus colony las...
