Re: CGs_Hortobágy_Hungary_2014_January_II
Hi Lou, a hybrid swarm? Perhaps - I guess it is possible. However, are we sure that we are not just seeing variation in cachinnans here? Having just returned from a gull trip to the eastern edge of the Black Sea, where there were tens of thousands of Caspian Gulls and not a single ringed bird (so pr...

Re: Larus glaucoides Kumlieni...?
Mars, most 1st-cycle Kumlien's Gulls have pale secondaries (though I agree it depends on the angle of viewing to some extent).
This is actually a key feature to separate them from Thayer's Gull.
Helder, your bird looks like a typical Kumlien's Gull to me.

Re: Putative Thayer's Gull - Faroe Isles
Hi Rune, the dark medial band on P10 should exclude Kumlien's Gull. However, are there no shots of the underwing, where it would be easier to judge and confirm this character? On the other hand, not just the broken pattern on P6 is problematic for Thayer's Gull, but also the structure of this bird, ...

Question about secondaries
Hi, does anyone have any photos of a European Herring Gull with tiny, isolated black spot(s) on the secondaries, as in this smithsonianus : http://gull-research.org/smithsonianus/smith4cy/4cyfebr012.html I cannot find anything similar in my collection of photos, so I am wondering if this is a diagno...

Re: 3rd cycle cachi with (almost?) no mirror
I must be missing something, as I do not see any problems with the bird on the 2nd pic of the set? Why would black down to P4 be that impossible for Herring Gull? Here is a colour-ringed bird from Belgium with pattern on P4. It was 6 years old when I photographed it: https://lh5.googleusercontent.co...

Re: 3rd cycle cachi with (almost?) no mirror
one example: last winter there have been seen and photogr. some adult gulls in romania with an "impossible" feature combination: head striation and structure suggested argentatus but in some of these long dorsal tongues AND a solid p5 mark were visible, a combination that as far as i know at least ...
