Nils Helge Lorentzen just confirmed that it was ringed as an adult on the nest,

Hi Pim
Black J005 was caught on the nest! All up in northern Norway that has been ringed as adults has been caught on nest.
They very hard to catch in other ways in Northern Norway.
All the best

intermedius from northern Norway
hi all, after the two recent observations of colour-ringed "Norwegian fuscus" at Westkapelle (black J030 and J781, ringing locations copied below) I did a quick search of my database to see if any other northern Norwegian birds had been seen at Westkapelle. As it turns out I have seen another one an...

Meanwhile at Neeltje Jans
Also known as the Storm-surge Barrier Dam. This site can hold really large numbers og GBBG's during/after northerly winds. Today was no different, NNW 7Bft and more than 700 GBBG's present scattered over several locations on the dam. Sander Lilipaly and I found 8 different Norwegian birds. http://lh...

Re: smith lookalikes
[ Any more pics of this bird ? Flightshots ? I'm puzzled by birds like this. Were the new scapulars pale grey or dark grey ? Hi Peter & all, I'm puzzled as well and yes, there are shots of the open wings and tail. Both pics taken by me at Westkapelle on 2 October 2009. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_UHcWbSX...

Re: smith lookalikes
Hi all, Peter's idea that it could be a LBBG crossed my mind as well but the short projection of the wings beyond the tail (although the angle is awkward) suggests Herring. Also, in a gull this dark I don't know if I can trust the pigments on the inner primaries. Looks like a slender bird though so ...

Re: kotters
Nothing much going on, behind or on the dike. Many tourists and only a handfull of gulls. Some LBBG's roosting behind the dike included an adult fuscus type bird. No open wing seen. Yesterday evening there were a few GBBG's on the dike including this one from southern Norway. pim http://lh3.ggpht.co...
