...what I meant to add was that a nice additional hint is in P10.....note the relatively small mirror of the pale eyed bird compared to the other one standing to the left, with lots of black between the mirror and wing tip....

Re: Pale eyes
Hi. Great images! I've been fiddling around with possible criteria for heinei for a little while. As Mars says, pale eyes do seem to be a feature of many heinei (based on personal observations plus images of birds in e.g. Kazakhstan on the breeding grounds). More work is needed (large samples etc) b...

Re: Identification of second winter kumlieni
Hi everyone, Thanks to Ruud for posting up our discussion on the ORG Forum; as Jan says, it is a topical subject given what is happening. Obviously lots more people know lots more than me about kumlieni, so the point I would like to emphasise is that my discussion with Ruud was simply the approach I...

Re: 1 cy birds in Azerbaijan
Hi Theo, Yes, you could very well be correct about the frosty bird being fuscus. Both jizz and plumage look good, and of course the jizz is probably better for this taxon than heuglini. One problem was establishing what might be passing through Azerbaijan in Sept (virtually nothing known about gulls...

Re: 1 cy birds in Azerbaijan
Hi Jan et al. As you say, there is uncertainty inherent in the IDs; so it is nice simply to think that people find the pics an interesting and useful reference resource from this part of the world. It would be great to show some of these and other birds from the trip at the Zagreb IGM if time permit...

Re: 1 cy birds in Azerbaijan
Hi Jan et al. Sorry, yes, perhaps I should of said. Amongst the adult and older immature gulls were heuglini and barabensis. As you know, criteria for 1 cy barabensis at this time of year still need some work and so, at least for me, those birds in the sample that are not classic cachinnans may be t...

1 cy birds in Azerbaijan
Hi everyone. I had a trip to Azerbaijan in September, watching gulls. I have lots of images and at the moment little time to work though them systematically (perhaps a job for the winter). I thought that in the meantime I would post a selection of 90 1 cy birds to share with you all. I hope you find...

Re: Mystery dark-tailed gull in Portugal
Thanks a lot guys. I think you have arrived at similar conclusions to me....a tricky bird that seems not to identifiable over here with any certainty, but an interesting individual nonetheless.

Mystery dark-tailed gull in Portugal
Hi everyone. I hope this is of interest... Several years ago (2006) I had a dark-tailed gull in Portugal. I came acoss the images again today when looking through some old files and thought it might provide some intertainment on the ORG forum. Can anyone provide some new insights? Ive put the pics o...
