Re: lusitanius weekend in Zarautz
Unringed 3CY birds, probably local lusitanius 3rd cycle. #1. With extensive head streaking, and, on average, this age class remain more immature in plumage than what one would expect, based on experience from Mediterranean michahellis. Nice smith pitfall... micha_3CY_38A2517.jpg #2. Even more immatu...

Re: lusitanius weekend in Zarautz
Unfortunately two unringed adult birds, hence no provenance on origin, but probably from local stock. #1. Note the long pale tongue on the underside of P10, a pattern often associated with michahellis from eastern populations. micha_ad_38A2363.jpg #2. Tongue on P10 rather long, but not angular endin...

Re: lusitanius weekend in Zarautz
Lusitanius r[0V9:G] 2CY, anxiously checking the sky as 4 Griffon Vultures drifted in into the valley as the sun broke through. Note no adult-like grey scaps in this bird. Life history shows the limits of the distribution for this 2CY bird. Also, instead of faithful to a certain location, birds seem ...

Re: lusitanius weekend in Zarautz
Illustrative bird for what we considered "Mediterranean michahellis 1CY". It's all about averages of course, but still: larger and more robust, less 'muddy' and patterned hence 'cleaner', advanced in its moult scheme with many wing-coverts and the upper tertials replaced as well for 2nd gen feathers...
