Re: close but no cigar?
Just a few 2nd-cycle European Herring Gulls for comparison: http://picasaweb.google.be/Zorkyyy/2ndCycleEuropeanHerringGull# Note that bird 1-3 were all seen at the same location on the same date. I am not entirely sure of the age of bird 5; it could be a 3rd rather than 2nd cycle. I have quite a few...

Some pics of the 2nd-cycle smithsonianus that is currently in Kerry, Ireland: http://pewit.blogspot.com/2010/08/american-herring-gull.html Very uniform plumage including lower breast and belly; all-dark tail; thin and quite long dark vertical bars on upper and under tail-coverts (not the triangular ...

Re: juv cachinnans or michahellis?
I am not sure if Caspian Gull can be fully excluded here, but the barred inner greater coverts and thin tail band sure fit michahellis better.
For the various appearances of juv. michahellis, have a look here.

Re: small Herring Gull ?
Thanks Jan. Head moult is certainly a factor here, but note also the small and short bill. That grey feather is the innermost primary, so the black pattern starts on P5. A dark pattern on P4 would not be that unusual (see e.g. birds 2, 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, 19, 23, and 24 on http://picasaweb.google.be/Z...

small Herring Gull ?
Just checking: this is a small Herring Gull and nothing else, right ? Seen today on the beach of Koksijde, Belgium. It looked as if someone put the head of a Ring-billed Gull on top of the body of a Herring Gull... HerringGull3c_smallFemale_Koksijde_27-06-2010_002.JPG HerringGull3c_smallFemale_Koksi...

Re: Pure 3cy Gull?
With that primary pattern and leg + bill colour, the Swedish bird should be a Common x Black-headed hybrid, right? http://www.artportalen.se/artportalen/gallery/Image.aspx?rappsyst=1&obsid=9663624&imageID=43252 /Hans Absolutely ! We have had a very similar bird in Belgium for at least 19 years now....

Re: Pure 3cy Mediterranean Gull?
Any flight shots, Ruud ? The white leading edge to the hand of Black-headed Gull seems to be a dominant trait, and usually present in hybrids - though the sample of such hybrids is very small. Derek Charles has photos of two hybrids here: http://www.pbase.com/derekcharles/med_x_black_headed_hybrid N...

Re: 2cy and 3cy
these types where the rarest present (2cy = 2 ind. photogr. ; 3cy = 4 ind. photogr.) do some 2cy spend their 1st summer on wintering grounds? Only a few, I would say. http://www.talk.gull-research.org/download/file.php?id=1207 probably a michahellis (2cy), a rare sight inside the danube delta, on a...
