Is it a common phenomenon that birds from the South migrate north? Untill now I had only read colourringed gulls from the north and east parts of Europe.

Yes it's a common phenomenon, our local birds do so every spring Except for small numbers from the Ebro delta, all of these Spanish birds have been ringed in winter.
