Wörth - Austria

Hello,

together with a change of weather the numbers of gulls definitely increased at my local patch in Wörth, eastern central Austria.
I had some nice deja-vu´s today. First one was CG 8P21 from southern Poland. I had seen it 2 days earlier in Krems 50 km ENE and now it was in Wörth!

Then I discovered a metalringed 1st winter CG, the ring was Lithuanian. Unfortunately I could see only the end of the number ....185 and the first letter E. Maybe it´s possible to identify the bird, if they have not more than 1000 young large gulls ringed last season...

Later all gulls gathered on the ice of a gravel pond, very fine to observe with telescope. A new green ring and really: It was 4P60 again, the famous hybrid, in it´s 7th year! I have got some poor digiscopings from (large) distance, not with open wing, but one can see the amount of black on P5. Still strong black on the bill, the bird seems to be more compact than an average CG.

This is the "high time" for gullers in southern central Europe with interesting mixed flocks, consisting of CG, HG (very different types), hybrids of them, michahellis and some birds I am not able to identify.

"ID1" might be a hybrid with Caspian jizz, long legs, CG bill but dark mask on head, pale iris with red orbital ring...
"ID2" and "ID3" is a small bird with short legs, compact bill, but dark iris, note the small mirror on P10! A little something like armenicus again.

Nice ring reading Wolfgang. A pity such birds as the 'armenian' is not ringed!

The large white tongue to P10 suggests cachinnans-influence?

One thing is evident: such dark-eyed yellow-legged non-cachinnans-gulls always occur in winter. I have never seen them in summer, when the Adriatic flock is here.

Ruud, what gull do you mean - ID1?

Today I tried to continue, but was very unlucky with the rings. Only partially read 4 BHG´s ( 1 Czechia, 2 Slowakia, 1 strange ring - never seen before), the 1st ringed canus FN43..., obviously a bird from D. Bukacinsky. But there was also a rather dark-eyed yellow legged gull with normal ring. It was quite near first and I have got a (unsure) reading of ...002856, but was not able to recognize the origin of that upside-down ring :(
It is not Croatia, Italy, Ukraine...

I´m even not sure about the ID of that gull, looks like YLG, but the eyes...

hi wolfgang,

nice winter guests you have there in wörth. the last 2 (ID 1-3) indeed could be hybrids, while ID 1 could possibly go as a pure caspian with pale irises and some head markings. the last one ('armenian') does have a large all white p10 tip, maybe what you saw as "small p10 mirror" was the shining through p9 mirror (visible ikn both pics, both wings) which indeed could be rel. small. did it have long or shortish wings? legs are short and bill as well. of course an underside view of wing would have been helpful...
thanks for sharing.

I want to exclude Ukraine, their rings I have seen had another inscription design. Also they need clip-rings.
I also don´t believe in Sempach, the inscription should include "Vogelwarte Sempach" but in the first line I can see something like ...AGIA". Mostly they need clip-rings too.
Anyway, its gone and I was not successful despite much patience and the loss of hours. You can only waite and hope that the bird will make the right moves on the ice. That day it was terrible, all birds did not cooperate...

One success: the partially read Lithuanian ring is solved - EN 03.185 was ringed as a chick last year at lake Kretuonas in a mixed colony ("argentatus group"). So it was the first Lithuanian large gull ringread in Austria!

@ Lou: You are right - the zone between mirror and tip looked black, but zooming out this area reveals that there is a pale shadow (excludes Armenian, I think ;) ) . Nevertheless a strange bird, it was nearly as small like a Common Gull. Extremely short bill even for michahellis, but dark eyes.

Fine - anyone here who is able to identify this ring as a Kiew-ring? Then I would try an attempt at Kiew RC...

Today I could read 8 rings of large gulls in Wörth, among them also Herring Gulls.

Again this KH75 from Russian White Sea with it´s whitish head, which had been - just on my birthday - at Murmansk rubbish dump, about 2500km from here. Further on Polish argentatus 829P, ringed 2003 as an adult breeding male near Wloclawek. Alread here in 2006 and 2009. And the hybrid 4P60.
