Łubna, Poland

Post by Ruud Altenburg » Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:06 pm

As an extension to this topic, here are a few ringed Croatian birds I photographed in Łubna (central Poland, near Warsaw). In spring and summer, michahellis is (very) common here, about as common as cachinnans. Based on my personal ring readings I would say most birds originate from the Adriatic (rings from Croatia and Italy). In winter, YLG is surprisingly rare on the dump with just a few individuals among many wintering argentatus (most rings from Finland) and cachinnans (from Poland and further east). The sole ringed YLG I observed in winter was a Polish breeder.

These pictures are from May 2007.

Nice series Michał! Looking at your pictures your hands must have been frozen ;) Is the wing tagged Caspian from your previous series from Germany?

Hi Rudd!
All my pictures post at forum are digiscoped with hand held camera at scope - so the quality is not the best.
Additional there was hard strong wind at Łubna and two times my scope was fall down by wind... :?

The wing tagged A caspian is a bird signed by Grzegorz Neubauer.
Bird was cathed at rubbish dump at central Poland (Konin) at 1/12/2004 as 5cy female.
The bird was present at Łubna also at 2005 and 2007. Single record from each year.

Hi Michal,
seems to be really a paradise for gull watchers and ringreaders, that Lubna dump. Interestingly I have never read a ring of a bird that was at Lubna before, otherwise I had several gulls here, which had visited Konin dump earlier.

It would be fine if you could send me one of the hyperboreus - only for a few days ;) , there is only one (proven?) record in Austria from the 1970ies.

Nice pics Michal! Could the birds named fuscus actually be smallish YLG´s? At least the second bird seems a bit too worn and advanced in scapular moult. And behind the first there´s a Caspian lurking.

Best regards
Hans
