Larus armenicus

Post by marsmuusse » Tue Aug 31, 2010 9:31 pm

Last month, Amir Ben Dov from Israel has examined adult Larus armenicus on primary moult scores. At his place it is a common species (we are still awaiting for the first to appear here!), and its nice to see the first tables. There is not really a website dealing with month-to-month differences in plumage development, but hopefully we can manage to build something on the ORG-site:

http://www.gull-research.org/armenicus/05cyaug.html

Hopefully we can continue to build more pages for this interesting taxon, and so far the pages look great, not the least by the beautiful pictures Amir took. I'll update this topic so now and then, when new months are added.

If you would like to do likewise for local birds at your place, please feel free to contact. Maybe something similar can be done for West Iberia (lusitanicus) and Atlantic-Cantabria (cantabricans). If anyone has contacts with people from the Ukrain/Romania (cachinnans) or Kasachstan (barabensis), I'm interested to hear as well!

I've added the findings of Dorit Liebers and Andreas Helbig, as published 10 years ago in the magazine Limicola:

And also several images by Albert de Jong, from July in NE Turkey. (Albert, thanks a lot! If you can tell more about these colonies in NE Turkey (size, threats, etc), please let me know).

Armenicus for September have been added, mainly adults:

The timing and development of moult become nicely visible now, when you compare August and September.
Thank you Amir!

Adults will be added later this week (hopefully, because Amir is already sending loads of November birds!!! ;-)

Have fun, Mars

I didn't have much time last weeks, but today I've added some 80 adult armenicus on the ORG site. And November is already waiting as well! Amir, great job again!

Mars, I write you offering to collaborate with my pictures and info to illustrate taxons like lusitanius, michahellis in Spain and cachinnans in Bulgaria.

And, of course, tons of pictures of wintering LBBG.

Cheers!
Gabi

Most of the November sections have been added. Interestingly, some birds seem to be replacing inner primaries, which should of course not be the case in the micha-complex (see other topic).
Also funny: for the first time, Amir photographed courtship ceremony on the wintering grounds for this species.

(and to pretend that I don't have a regular job, together with Gabi and Antonio we are trying to create pages on lusitanius, hopefully with many ringed birds.) Have fun!

Mars
