Another interesting gull from Hungary

Post by hieraaetus » Fri Nov 14, 2014 12:30 pm

Hi Guys,

I have just seen a basically juvenile plumaged gull, which, in my opinion share features of both cachinnans and marinus.

If this is a CG then can it be a pure one with plumage and moult stage like that?
If it shows hybridish characters then what species the parents might be?

One thing for sure, when I soptted the gull sitting facing towards me from about 200-250ms I was almost sure that it was going to be a weak-billed 1st-winter GBBG..then it stood up and I wasn't sure anymore.

Thanks for any comment!

Cheers,

Gabor
Ps: Sorry for the quality, temperatures have been hovering around 20 Celsius lately...

hi gabor,

can't have marinus parent with such a compact black tail band. my guess is cachinnans x argentatus.

Hi Lou,

Thanks for the quick reply!

How infrequent are CGs with only very few scapulars replaced by mid-November? I don't think I can recall any since I have been watching and photographing gulls.

Cheers,

Gabor
