An old friend from Poland

Post by totoguti » Fri Oct 11, 2013 4:55 pm

Dear all:
Today 11.10.2013 at Meirás Beach, Valdoviño, A Coruña, NW Spain (43º36´07´´N – 08º11´33´´W) an old polish friend was resting on the beach.
It seems ok for cachinnans, but I think it´s head is a bit angled and squared, Strong bill and with a dark spot in front of the eye. Any opinion from more trained eyes, please.
All the best.
Antonio

hi antonio,

it's true, somethimg is odd for it being a cachinnans. there might be some argentatus blood in it accounting for the short and somewhat high bill, head shape and contrasting pattern in GC (2nd gen). and if i look at the scapulars from february - they also look wrong for pure 2nd gen. cachinnans scaps. so, probably a F1 or F2 hybrid with tatus.

greets,

lou

Hi Lou:
Thanks a lot for your experienced opinion.
First time I saw this bird in a photograph (was sighted In Huelva, Southern Spain on 13. sept.2012) it had some argentatus " smell".

Hi,
Kozielno is in the southwest of Poland, close to the border with Czech Republic.
As you can see in figure 1 of this paper, this colony is far from the main contact zone and holds mainly Caspian Gulls.
