Herring Gull 1st winter - darker end

At the paler end, there may be confusion to separate it from birds with hyperboreus influences. But the darker end is nice as well...

Obviously straying off topic because this is a second winter bird but quite an unusual plumage! The ring was Dutch and probably applied before the bird was released from care. I don't think this is a local Herring.

I received some images by Kjeld, a bird ringed in Copenhavn on 24 February 2011. And photographed again with ring.

The "darker end 1st winter Herring Gulls" remain an interesting item. Over the last month, we saw extremely large flocks of Herring Gulls at the beaches, with groups of several 1,000's congregated together at small areas. After some stormy days, large colonies of American jack knife clam (Ensis americanus) became available.
