Questions of identification

Post by Dmitry Goncharov » Fri Jun 06, 2014 4:20 pm

Hello,
A female of a breeding LBBG pair was ringed this year (30.04.2014, Gatovo). It seems to me that this gull is L.f.heuglini,
but judging by a pale color of coverts (compared with intermedius) perhaps, the bird relates to L.f.graellsii. A male has a similar color.
I would like to know your opinion. Thanks in advance, Dmitry.

Hi,
the second bird looks normal for (pure) cachinnans to me.

Hello. I guess, a gull on the photos is a hybrid (cachinnans x argentatus).
I would be grateful for your opinion.
Dmitry.

For iris colour, see Gibbins et al (2010).
An excerpt:
"Eye colour varies enormously in cachinnans: Jonsson (1998) suggested that c. 75% of adult cachinnans appear 'medium- to dark-eyed' in the field, whereas Liebers& Dierschke (1997) found that 48% of birds in one Ukrainian colony and 62% in another were 'pale-eyed'."

Hello,
I think it is a pair of L. fuscus intermedius. I would be grateful for your opinion.
Dmitry.
