This 1st winter American herring gull was discovered on 16 of January in Puławy, lubelskie, SE Poland, by Łukasz Bednarz. It was also seen on the 21st of January. It has been accepted as American herring gull by the PoIish rarity committee. This must represent the most unusual Smith record in Europe. This gull recieved an extensive discussion on the western palearctic gulls fb page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/europea ... 099381917/ The upperparts appear quite smooth. The underparts are smooth, but are bit uneven, so within the variation of the european herring gull. However, all other features fit very well american herring gull, such as the undertail coverts, greater coverts, axillaries, scapular feathers, hindneck and bill. There was some discussion that it might be a hybrid between glaucous gull and herring gull, but this was ruled out, and indeed there are too many features against it. Simply amazing record.
