unringed intermedius...

Post by Theo Muusse » Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:00 pm

An adult female seen today does show new primaries, but is p4 also new or is it up to p3?
P1-p3 show greyish tips but p4 does not and seems to be worn a bit, but much less than p5.
Note the fresh coverts, normally not a good indicator to fuscus fuscus..

I'm not very convinced about a generation division in the primaries in this bird, Theo. Grey outer tips on the inner primaries are a common feature in fuscus, and wear and tear in all the flight feathers is pretty homogeneous. Of course, those primaries that fall beyond the longest tertials in a folded wing show more wear (So, P5 onwards) but in general the dark greytone of the base of the feathers is equally faded.
Hence, I would conclude: full house...

So , coverts yes and primaries no?
The grey colour isn't thought to be present in the tips when they are fresh, bleaching into white soon?
