lusitanius weekend in Zarautz

Post by marsmuusse » Tue Dec 04, 2018 7:36 pm

Friday 23 - Sunday 25 November 2018 a gull seminar was organised in the town of Zarautz, by the Bask nature organisation 'aranzadi'.
It was a great event, well organised, good food and a beer or two, and lots and lots of gulls including many ringed birds from various projects.
Below a short impression.

List of rings.
Few codes missing and still to be read from images of fly-by birds.

r[0F3:G] is an adult lusitanius, ringed as pullus on June 18 2012 at Getaria. Typically for the taxon, it remained in the area over the years and we had this bird on Friday morning's gull trip from a boat, in Biskaje Gulf, north of Getaria harbour.

r[5V2:G] is a bird ringed as pullus on June 30 2016, now 3CY lusitanius. The vertical red lines indicate a long distance migrant southwards, but that is caused by a wrong input of location and has to be changed in the database.

r[030:G] is a 10CY lusitanius, which shows the classic distribution for the winter period, always lingering around along the Bask coast and the very SW tip of France.
Ringed on June 20 2009 at Donostia / San Sebastián. As 10CY in winter, not really 'yellow-legged'.

r[A31:G] is a 1CY lusitanius ringed this summer at Getaria, 5 minutes away from zarautz.
As in many 1CY November birds the wing covert panel is completely juvenile and even the rear lower scaps are often still to be replaced. Overall 'smudgy' birds (compared to Med micha's) with much patterning on underparts and head and majority of birds on average obvious smaller than Med micha's, giving rise to misidentification as Lesser Black-backed Gull.

b[GAA:Y] these rings are used for birds ringed in winter / non-pullus. A good portion of the birds will probably origin from the local breeding stock, hence good lusitanius birds, but certainty can only be obtained when breeding is observed in the coming years.
