Adult Canet-en-Roussillon 10.9.2013

Post by walther » Fri Oct 04, 2013 12:25 pm

Hi,

Looking through my pics I found this one.

In my opinion (as newbie to gull-watching) the moult is different in both wings. Is there, in each wing, moult on 2 places ? Which primaries are missing ?

Thanks,

Walther

In my newbie opinion I can see an adult Herring Gull. Legs are pinkish, bill look quite massive and generally HG appearance.

Hi Boris,

It was defenitly not a Herring Gull but a Yellow-legged Gull. Herring Gull is a very rare vagrant in that region. This pic is from the same bird :

From the photo you upload first I can see only the pink feet of the bird, but if this is the same bird for sure, I will have to agree is yellow-legged.
Cheers

Hi Walther,
a Yellow-legged Gull indeed, and something seems to have gone wrong in its left wing, as one inner primary seems to be missing there.
This may not have anything to do with moult, but could simply indicate some local damage.

BTW: The current issue of Natuur.Oriolus features an article on moult in gulls and terns.
