Spinus wrote:Thanks Theo for answer. This bird indeed doesn't looks like other "typical" hyperargentatus, but I have seen only few pictures of hybrid with GBBG.
Can you explain your presumption, is there any diagnostic details (bil, plumage pattern)?
Do you know any sites with pictures of hybrids?
One more pictures of this ineresting gull.
Well, the jizz looks like gbbg.
There have been some records in Sweden recently..

Photographed at Westkapelle on 27 October 2010, this 1cy is not a typical Viking Gull by any standard, it's not as big or pale as most of the examples in this topic. Also note the bill and judging by the amount of scapular-moult this one has some genes that induce it to moult early. So a Northern argentatus or hyperboreus influence seems pretty unlikely, but it still is a strikingly pale and well patterned bird. Using my exif-viewer it would seem that some of Derek's photographs that show birds with fresly moulted scap's have been taken in October as well. The only Herring Gull that moults this extensively this early in autumn is argenteus. Has anyone "up North" seen anything like this in one of their colonies?

Hi folks - nice pics on this thread; here are poorer photos of a pale Herring type taken a week ago at Port Seton harbour, east of Edinburgh in Scotland; from what I have read most think these are within the variability of Herring Gull, particularly without obvious pro-Glaucous structural features and bill pattern, but I would be interested in further comment if anyone can make a case for direct influence of Glaucous; the shot below is the best I got of the tail which almost completely lacked a tail band.

I'm struggling to see the Herring influence in this bird mentioned above. Can anyone point out why this bird is considered to be a viking gull and not a more dark form of Glaucous gull? (I'm quite a novice to gull identification so I'm definately overlooking something)
