Hybrids fuscus x argentatus

Post by Ruud Altenburg » Sun Sep 27, 2009 8:30 pm

This week I observed no less than three (probable) adult hybrids Herring x LBBG:

I wonder how and where two commonly occurring species in NW Europe can hybridize? A mixed pair has been found on Texel in 2006 (are any pictures available?) but has hybridisation also been observed elsewhere?

Beste Ruud,
Ik heb je foto's met veel interesse bekeken.
Deze dieren lijken sterk op 'mijn' IJmuiden vogels.
Erg leuk!

Hello everyone.
Here are two suspected lbbg x herring hybrids from Ireland. The first is a bird which returns to Killybegs every winter and is seen well into spring. In winter it is sometimes reported by visitors as a possible Atlantis YLG and in spring as a YLG. I suspect that it is this bird that is reported to breed in summer in a nearby County in a colony of LBBG's again as a YLG.

The second is a bird only seen briefly at Killybegs and not in flight. The bright yellow leg colour is very interesting on a suspected hybrid?

Derek

Hallo Derek,

so argentatus x fuscus is not a common hybrid in Ireland? I really do wonder where these birds are from. In Holland they seem to be rather rare, except around Sep-Oct.

Cheers

Ruud
