IJmuiden 29-01-2010 ~ From Russia with love

Title sounds like spam virus, but it was nice to see KH89 yesterday! From the western White Sea, together with two locals; added as well...

Hi Mars,
today I have got a closer picture from KH75, which now is almost 3 weeks present at my site in Wörth (central Austria). In spite of nearly neighbouring ringnumbers it is ringed on another island of western White Sea - Lunnye. Late August/early September 2009 it had visited Murmansk rubbish dump at Barent Sea.
Watching the pic´s on GRO-website I was attracted by KV79, which has a very similar whitish head.

This winter season I have got Austrian readings from 32 Caspian Gulls (most of them done by myself ;) ) and from 3 Herring Gulls (all by myself ;) ). I think KH75 will remain the reading of the year...

Wolfgang

Mars, the bird was in Murmansk, not myself ;)
I would really like to see all this places where the gulls had been, which I have read. And of course the gulls there...

Murmansk is just a detail from KH75´s life list, provided by Moscow RC.

One of the now 35 CG´s this season is 3P61. I had seen it 4 years ago as a 2nd winter bird. Now it was seen by a colleague in Krems, 40km from here and already next day it was here in Wörth! A nice deja-vu. Today, 2 days later, I was in Krems - and again 3P61 was present!

KH89, yesterday 14 Febr 2010 seen at Boulogne-s-Mer by J M Sauvage.
Once again an indication that birds that winter in the NorthSea, wander around for food in a large triangle between the British coast, south to Calais and north up to about Ijmuiden.

Hi Jan,
I know I will get in a danger zone with this mail, but believe me, the bird in the preview post labeled 'cach2cy' really was a cachinnans. First of all on sound, but also tail pattern, scaps and replaced coverts. Nontheless, the most striking feature in ordinary cach (as wee know it), i.e. the head profile and paleness, is not very striking in this bird.
Pleasant coincidence: one week later an identical bird was present at Scheveningen, immediately recognised on sound again!

Well thanks Mars, you of course got the point. Not the most typical impression from this pic. hence my questioning. I realice that 1st cycle cachinnans occasionally take on the not so called typical pattern and structure (the latter especially in varies pic). Variation is the name of the game, leaving hybrids out for the moment ;)

Cheers Mars
