Last wednesday 20/10/2010, at Peniche this supossed LBBG resembling a slender Baltic on jizz, was present.... a very small Gull, with also very yellowish legs
Advanced 1 cy ????
Another rather odd bird, from the same place..... small rounded head, short bill...but what striked me was the position of the eye, giving the bird a strange look.
Otherwise my first impression was dark LBBG!
regards,
Rui

The LBBG and the YLG in your other thread must have spent time at sea. What you are seeing are swollen salt glands.

Hello Ruud, with Gulls, we are allways learning .... in fact this time of the year Peniche waters are rich in seafood, due to seasonal upwelling, and Gulls can be seen by hundreds on sea. Swollen salt glands explains bigger and round heads with small eyes
thanks,
Rui

Yesterday I saw a yellow-billed 1cy lbbg here in Holland.
It turned out to be ringed here as well.
So maybe yellow bills belong to Holland!

Regarding the last photo that I posted, How far is this bird from being heuglini ????As far as I know there is a difficulty in ageing and Id"ing" 1 cy heuglini from fuscus, and probably this gull seen on 24 and 26 of November as shown a to far advanced moult for heuglini, but apart from Olsen & Larsson"Gulls" there is not much information regarding these taxa 1 st year.
The tail band was distinct, with contrasting white rump, and underwing was rather pale,I couldnt get any photo of it, the upperwing color was pale brown when it flown away .
What about the pale notchings on the scapulars, are they common on lbbg...........
Just a pale lbbg???? Opinions welcomed

Rui Caratão

Another yellow bill graellsii (a 2cy). This time in the Netherlands at a waste dump in Barneveld. See http://www.flickr.com/photos/birdaddict ... hotostream for some pictures. Beside the bill the colour of the mantle was a bit strange for a graellsii. Could be some kind of pigmentation problem?
