Sub-adult European Herring Gull with tertial spots
I came across this rare occurrence of a sub-adult European Herring Gull with tertial spots this weekend. argentatus-4cy-tertial-spots-20140427-1.jpg argentatus-4cy-tertial-spots-20140427-2.jpg argentatus-4cy-tertial-spots-20140427-3.jpg It seems to be a 4th-calendar year (dark greater primary covert...

Hi Pietro, I have been keeping track of the primary pattern of a ringed European Herring Gull over the last few years, between his 24th calendar year and 28th calendar year. Have a look at my blog: Primary pattern variation in individual European Herring Gull . I have seen him again recently and com...

Re: 4cy Caspian type
Hi Peter,
No, I can't exclude a Herring either.
Other suggestions that I have received about this bird so far range from 'something funny from Poland' and Yellow-legged.

It is showing a mix of Caspian and Herring/Yellow-legged features: - Broad bill with well-marked gonydeal angle (Herring/Yellow-legged) - Dark iris - Head pattern remini...

Re: longevity records for gulls
The record of the oldest known Black-headed Gull seems to have been broken (by 4 months). The weblog of the Dutch organization Natuurmomumenten reports that a Black-headed Gull fitted with a British ring was found dead on the Dutch coast last May and turned out to have been ringed in 1979, making it...
