Hi Lou,
looks a bit chunky, with a big eye and shortish stron bill...but maybe a more relaxed pose could reveal something different!
The bird behind in the first pic looks very interesting: thayeri P 10 in 2nd winter plumage??
ciao
Michele

Re: Gull with 'thayeri' P10 pattern
Very interesting comments! I ordered the two issues of British Birds regarding Caspian Gull ID just a few days ago and I'm still waiting for them. I agree that this feature could be very hard to discern in the field and pictures: after looking in my archive, I was able to find just a single bird sho...

Gull with 'thayeri' P10 pattern
Hi guys! yesterday I had a very interesting gull flying overhead while I was gullwatching in a little lake in northern Italy. It had a very pale underwing pattern with a lot of white in the hand. I already had some Caspian Gulls in the same place last year with a similar P10 pattern, but something a...

Re: Gull from Italy
Thank you Lou! I was suspecting it plumage-wise, but once again the structure falls out of the range of the Caspians I am used to confidently name Caspian Gull :) This means that this winter I will have a lot of fun trying to make my cachinnans box bigger (today already 2 Caspians and an Herring)! H...

Re: Eastern michahellis (?)
Hi guys, wow, that's a relief! It would have been very difficult to explain all of these features in a YLG! My only problem with these birds is that I find very hard to put such an head shape and quite short-legged impression in my idea of Caspian Gulls, also because of the fact that Caspian is stil...

Eastern michahellis (?)
Hi all! this is my first post on this forum, but I've been reading (and learning a lot) since last year. These 2Cy gulls were photographed on Varese Lake, northern Italy, last winter (from the same place in the same period I had 4 CG ringed in Poland, a HG from Finland and a LBBG from extreme northe...
