argentatus?

Post by JanJ » Tue Dec 29, 2009 10:13 pm

Hi all.

What are you people's impression when seing Alan Dalton's gull - taken in Stockholm today? It looks a bit dark and the scapular pattern seems odd for a 2cy argentatus. A LBBG is a better option of course, I see that now

Some more pic.
I´m not specifically suggesting graellsii - but something within the LBBG ssp. Or is it just an odd argentatus?
Anyway - a graellsii in winter Stockholm - stranger things has happend!

well, could of course be an intermedius but scapulars do look rel. pale for that especially for those which almost get black as adults. but i can't give any better suggestion either. heuglini/barabensis seem off as they'd have a much more advanced plumage by now.

I know that it is streaching this to much - but some showing more of the wing pattern on this 2cy LBBG, presumable graellsii.

Yes I did Lou.
Not a common feature in 2cy LBBG or HG but does very rarely occur. I can verify for just 1 seen by myself over the years!

When we combine all features, time of year, place or whatever, I get a strong intermedius feeling.
Its a slender bird with a slender bill (female) with obvious signs of LBBG. The pattern of the freshest scaps with only a shaft streak darker, the dark grey colour of the ad-like feathers, the inner primaries, yes, I feel for a female intermedius. Despite the mirror on p10 and the tail-barring.
