This 1st winter Herring Gull-type was photographed By Tim Hesselballe Hansen in Fredericia, Denmark 10/10-2011.

He saw it while driving and had a feeling, that it was probably a Caspian og Yellow-legged Gull based on the tail-pattern.

He quicky realized that it was neither though when seing it with his bins and took some photos of the bird.

However the tailpattern etc looks funny for a pure Herring Gull.

Is this within the variation of Herring would you think?

Best wishes Rune Sø Neergaard

HG? No, never my opinion.
Eye mask, bill shape, tail pattern, tertials etc. pp.
I think all features are good for a identification as michahellis.

Hi Ronald.

I didn´t say it was a Herring ( ;) - only that Herring could show a similar tail pattern (http://www.helsinki.fi/~rauste/juvmic/argtail/)
However, while some features mentioned suggest michahellis - the inner primary pattern does not look good for michahellis.

Cheers
