Hi All:
Any comment about this strange gull will be very apreciated

This birds was observed on 3 and 4 January 2012 in NW Spain.

An odd larus fuscus graellsii.... An hybrid..... A presumed Larus michahellis atlantis.....
I have experience with the dark, and small NW Spanish michahellis called "lusitanius" but I have no experience with L. m. atlantis and this is a sedentary ssp....

In Spanish.....
Thanks in advance
Antonio

Hello Antonio.

Nice and interesting (not fully adult) gull there! As long as someone doesn´t come along saying it´s a LBBG, the atlantis theory is quite good imo. The pattern of the headstreaking, with less on the nape and the fact that id doesn´t reach below the head looks good. However, the head pattern alone does not seal the identification of atlantis, since a few Herrings almost match the pattern (pers obs). In Antonius pic the obvious darker mantel alongside YLG could match a graellsii - but can it be excluded. There´s also something about the build and short-legged impression that bring minds to atlantis. We´ll see.

Hi again:
New pics of this interesting and odd bird... This new pics were taken yesterday (15 January 2012).
Slightly paler than graellsii and slightly darker than our michahellis (NW Spain) ....
I don´t know how a mich x fuscus hibrid could be at this age......

It does look good for Azorean António, another one as been reported from the NW Portuguese coast this week, a presumed 3 winter http://www.flickr.com/photos/8793530@N0 ... 22203@N00/

un saludo,
Rui
