Gull ID

Post by Roger Harris » Thu Jan 26, 2012 10:31 am

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum and also to the finer details of gull ID and ageing, so please bare with me while I learn!

I've recently taken a few photos that I could use some expert help on (please see links below). The first two links are to a gull that was with Herring gulls at my local reservoir and it stood out as having a very white head and also slightly darker shade of grey than the herring's with it. It didn't look quite normal to me, hence I took the photos - which by the way are not great quality as this bird was some considerable distance away, sorry! If it is possible to confirm ID for me, it would be appreciated.

The third link is (I presume) a fairly standard 2cy argenteus but with a bright yellow bill pattern that I've not noticed before? Any comments would be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

R Harris

The first two pics seem to show a nice caspian gull.
The third picture is another example of over-accentuated colours, already mentioned here (in another topic).

Cheers, Theo
