Last week, they were back again and accompanied by many gulls, the fishing boats!
On Tuesday, numbers remained low but on Thursday, 1000s of LBBG and HG found the famous
dike of Westkapelle. Birds turned out to be very approachable, by car up within 2 meters, by foot within 5 meters.
10 1cy ylg, 2 2cy and an ad were seen, as 2 1cy Caspian Gulls, one from Poland.
LBBG rings seen originated from Helgoland (1), Norway (4), France, Belgium and Holland.
An unringed fuscus candidate showed up shortly too.
Most birds arrived at 13.00 hrs, with muddy feet or swollen nose.
Wind was WNW 4.

October 6th 2009: many gulls on the dike in the pooring rain.
Rain is a positive weather forecast since tourist ignore the dike and many more gulls
remain on the dike. Furthermore, gulls do not lay down in the rain, so rings are read easily.
The maxima: gbbg 70, lbbg 400, hg 600, casp g 1, ylg 4, comon g 3
Rings present were from Belgium, Holland, Poland 1, Germany 2, Denmark 1, Norway 5, Sweden 1

October 8th saw only a few gulls (herring 200, lbbg 40, gbbg 8, mich 4) but 3 micha's came to bread.
Always nice to see them closer.

Re: kotters
Yesterday, October 7, fishing trawlers close to the coast of Katwijk - Noordwijk. Resting-preening flocks on the beach from Katwijk - Zandvoort, flocks of several 100's together. For this strech of beach, many 1.000's must have been present. Including many juveniles and surprisingly many lbbg.

Re: kotters
Trawlers or no trawlers, Westkapelle is also famous for another kind of human activity; mindless, oblivious, obnoxious walking through groups of gulls. Ring-readers need to be aware of this and work at maximum speed!

Re: kotters
Nothing much going on, behind or on the dike. Many tourists and only a handfull of gulls. Some LBBG's roosting behind the dike included an adult fuscus type bird. No open wing seen.
Yesterday evening there were a few GBBG's on the dike including this one from southern Norway.
