Today, a nice set of scarcer gulls and rings were seen at Barneveld.
Highlights in the ringing section included adult tatus from Russia, Estonia and Norway.
The 3rd winter sempach michahellis added to the total number of 12.
Cachinnans were available with a total of 11 unringed birds.
Pictures will follow soon by Albert and Merijn.

So, what you're asking for is an open winglou bertalan wrote:this 1cy download/file.php?id=3580
has hellish strong patterned GCs for a pure cachinnans...
lou

Indeed, the GC are strongly patterned, but I have seen it more in otherwise pure looking cachinnans in the Netherlands.
The bird has a normal tail pattern, venetian blind in the inner primaries (is that reaching to far [p7?]) and a whitish underwing. But the remaing pattern on the new scaps is somewhat bold.
Whether pure or not, a nice bird.

Re: Barneveld today
yes, nice bird indeed, whatever it is, and it reminds me of a bird photogr. by jan j. on öland this summer: http://www.netfugl.dk/pictures.php?id=s ... e_id=50015 which to me looks more like a michahellis than a cachinnans x argentatus but that's another theme. of course some caspians have checkered inner GCs but if it is very pronounced i get doubts. other pics with jan's bird show that the pattern has a very sharp triangular pattern: http://www.netfugl.dk/pictures/birds_us ... G_1296.jpg and notched tertial pattern (ok for mich/tatus, not ok for cachi). your bird however has not so clear triangular shaped elements and thus looking more argentatus-like. so, it might be a pure cachi but it could also be a cachi x tatus.
as for the venetian blind: pale portions usually are present on all primaries (up to p10!) but they are concealed and smaller towards wingtip.
