Fuscus?

Post by hieraaetus » Tue Oct 26, 2010 8:40 pm

Hi All,

Here are some birds i need your opinion on.

1. The 1.st and 5.th picture to me a 2nd winter fuscus but it had the same mantle color like that intermedius i posted 2 days ago.Actually they were on the same lake the same day but they didn't want to swim side by side..
I keep thinking that it might be an intermedius too.

2. Regarding the adult fuscus i would like to ask who has experience with it, how often do they have mirror on P9? i read it usually occurs on females.is that true?

3. the 2nd and 6th picture was taken on 07/17/2010 on the same lake..it's just somehow odd to me for a michahellis.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Gabor

sorry for not putting the pictures next to each other would belong together.next time i will pay attention to it.

Contrary to the post I previously replied to this 2cy LBBG is a typical one!

There's a considerable overlap in mantle colour between fuscus and intermedius, so basing your identification on just that criterium is risky to say the least. Assuming the picture has been taken recently (please post location and date in every topic so we don't have to guess!) I would opt for fuscus. In October, most western birds have yet to complete their moult. Your bird already looks quite worn (e.g. scapulars and tertials), indicating that these feathers have been replaced some time ago.
